Scratches Left in the Hardpan

I am the Black Rock Lobster, superhero and protector of Black Rock City. Herein are my reports of patrols and experiences there in the jeweled city on the sands of a vanished sea.

.

Black Rock Lobster is commonly reffered to as "Lobsterman."

BURNINGMAN 2009 REPORT PART V: ARTS

The Painting below sums it all up pretty good.

The Art ranged in scale and subject this year.
Here are a few things we saw biking around the playa.

a big metal female reproductive system with a steel butterfly on top.

Our ART CAR, complete with observation deck.
This was key on BURN NIGHT.

An enormous goddess made of chains,
holding a white-hot fire in her hands.

art survey to be continued...

BURNINGMAN REPORT PART IV: BARBARIANS

One of the camps I insisted on visiting was
BARBARIAN CAMP,
who offered a
BARBARIC OBSTACLE COURSE
for brave souls to attempt.
It was a hearty challenge to my
Warrior Spirit.

I swung, crawled, climbed, lifted, and crossed a massive chasm to earn the respect of these savage folk.

BURNINGMAN 2009 REPORT PART III: HEROES

"WE CAN BE HEROES- just for one day"
-david bowie

It was not long
before we answered the mighty
call of Justice
with a
hearty desert thirst.
Captain Black Rock, another area superhero, sent up the signal for all heroes to unite. We did, and were granted frosty margaritas!

Heroes of all types showed up for the Superhero Bar Crawl.

BURNINGMAN 2009 REPORT PART II: THE MAN

The Black Rock Lobster is on the Playa! As soon as the car was parked I was out scurrying around. It did not take long for a dust storm to hit.

The Man was placed upon an abstract, flame-like structure made of thousands of bits of wood. It loomed up out of the dust storm as we approached.

In a week's time, the innocent wooden flames would erupt in flames so hot they were white. Directed by the structure the flames churned and roiled, acting more like a plasma than a flame.

REPORT ON BURNINGMAN 2009 PART I: BASICS

The Bar end of our Bar/Art Gallery theme camp.

The Black Rock Lobster is back from The Burn, with plenty of adventures to share.

For now, a few brief notes on the things that stand out most:

  • We are a theme camp! It was our second year camping with The Velvet Soulmine (a bar) and operating my Art Gallery as part of the Theme Camp. Of all my burns it stands out as being the most fun with friends and neighbors. My friend Randy runs the Soulmine and he is one cool cat. He brought friends together from all around the nation and I enjoyed camping with all of them. I even made new friends that live in SLC!

  • We had an Art Car! Again, thanks to the SOULMINE crew we finally had an Art Car- something the Lobsterman needs to experience more. It was great touring all the art we usually miss because it's way out in the deep playa.

  • I participated even more! In addition to being several of Black Rock City's Superheroes, and creating an art gallery, I also got to display my best painting up in Center Camp. That was great, as it was seen by tens of thousands of folks.

That's the skinny for now, Lobster Fans. I'll post more in the days to come, including some photos.

LEAVING FOR BLACK ROCK CITY

The Van is packed with unimaginable items, artwork, and costumes. We are leaving at dawn for Black Rock City, which was featured in this month's National Geographic.

The Lobster Suit has a new lighting system and paintjob. Looking forward to stretching my shell.

See you in 10 days!

THE MAN BURNS IN 22 DAYS!
We are on the launch pad and madly preparing for takeoff. We depart for the desert in 2 weeks. It is now a scramble to locate and assemble various EL wire projects, blinkies, doodads, and gizmos. Hmmm where is my metallic spraypaint?

THE BURNINGMAN CHIPMUNK CONNECTION?

Here is a scene I created for the videogame
"Alvin & The Chipmunks."
I decided the Chipmunks should perform at
an "unnamed desert art festival"
where they burned a wooden Chipmunk Effigy.
